OUR HISTORY

In May 1971 representatives from the regional library headquarters in Prince Albert came to Blaine Lake to access the possibility of setting up a library in the basement of the Town and RM building. In the fall of 1972, the Blaine Lake R. M. Council held a plebiscite and obtained returns of a count of 347 for and 91 against allowing the Town Hall basement to house the library. 



The Blaine Lake Regional Library Grand opening was on April 3, 1973. Volunteers have been the backbone starting with the group of forward thinking individuals who opened the first community library in the basement of the Town and R.M. building in 1973.


June 16, 1973 the first library Board was formed with Alex Cheveldayoff and chairman and Town Rep; Alfred Nesdoly as R.M. Rep; Elizabeth Borisinkoff secretary-treasurer. Others on the board were Doreen Konkin, Mary Larners, Eleanora Boyko, Bill Cisecki, Andrew Ciona, Pastor Arthur Clarke, Donna Dargin, Elaine Hunchak, Sylvia Savage and Connie Skrine.
On April 1975, the regions name was changed from North Central Sask. Library to Wapiti Regional Library (in reference to the elk found in abundance in northern Saskatchewan.)



Elizabeth Borisinkoff and Christine Cheveldayoff were the first librarians. Dec. 31, 1979 Elizabeth resigned as librarian and Christine Cheveldayoff became head librarian, Lucy Cheveldayoff became assistant librarian. On July 31, 1982: Christine Cheveldayoff resigned her position and became assistant librarian. Lucy Cheveldayoff took over as head librarian. 


The Library moved from the basement location in town hall to the CN station on Oct. 12, 1983.
The CNR Station, built in 1912, became a heritage site in 1980, the town obtained the Heritage Site in the same year for $100 plus $5 tax.

The CNR building houses more than just the library. The back portion of the building contains the town museum and has a number of historical artifacts on display for public viewing during library hours. On the grounds you can visit the original town jail, see the --- mill, or sit in the gazebo while eating your lunch.
